Department of Tamil
Dept. Code: TAMILThe Department of Tamil is one of the oldest and most significant at Sethupathy Government Arts College, with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Established in 1979 at the UG level and 2003 at the PG level, it offers B.A. and M.A. degrees in Tamil. The department also provides research opportunities through M.Phil. (from 2013) and Ph.D. (from 2013). With a sanctioned intake of 40 students for undergraduate courses and 20–25 at the postgraduate and research levels, the department has been instrumental in nurturing Tamil language, literature, and culture among rural and urban students.
Department of English
Dept. Code: ENGLISHThe Department of English began offering undergraduate courses in 1975 and later expanded to include postgraduate studies with the introduction of M.A. English in 2013. At the UG level, the sanctioned strength is 40, and the PG intake is 25. The department plays a vital role in enhancing communication skills, literary appreciation, and employability skills of students. It also contributes significantly to the personality development and career readiness of learners in the region.
Department of Economics
Dept. Code: ECONOMICSThe Department of Economics is one of the founding departments of Sethupathy Government Arts College, established in 1965. It began with the B.A. Economics programme, offered in both English Medium and Tamil Medium, with a sanctioned strength of 20 students in English Medium and 40 students in Tamil Medium. To meet the increasing demand for advanced studies in the subject, the department introduced the M.A. Economics programme in 1982, with an intake of 20 students in English Medium. Further strengthening its academic profile, the department launched research-oriented programmes (M.Phil. in Economics (2013) and Ph.D. in Economics (2013)).
Department of Mathematics
Dept. Code: MATHThe Department of Mathematics is one of the earliest science departments, established in 1965. It offers B.Sc. Mathematics (with an intake of 24), M.Sc. Mathematics (2010, intake of 25), and advanced research programmes like M.Phil. (2012) and Ph.D. (2013). The department is known for its rigorous academic curriculum, logical reasoning training, and research-oriented approach. Graduates have gone on to excel in teaching, research, IT, and analytical roles.
Department of Physics
Dept. Code: PHYIntroduced in 1977, the Department of Physics offers B.Sc. Physics (intake 24) and M.Sc. Physics (from 2013, intake 20). It also extends research opportunities with M.Phil. (2013) and Ph.D. (2016). The department provides a solid foundation in both theoretical and experimental physics, supported by laboratory facilities and updated syllabi. The department recently conducted a one-day international conference and is equipped with modern facilities including an AV classroom, Physics Lab, computer lab, and microprocessor lab.
Department of Chemistry
Dept. Code: CHEMThe Department of Chemistry was started in 1979 and offers B.Sc. Chemistry (24 seats) and M.Sc. Chemistry (from 2013, intake 20). With well-equipped laboratories and separate lab facilities, the department emphasizes both practical and conceptual learning. Department of Botany
Dept. Code: BOTEstablished in 1978, the Department of Botany offers B.Sc. Botany (intake 24) and M.Sc. Botany (from 2013, intake 20). Department of Zoology
Dept. Code: ZOOStarted in 2013, the Department of Zoology offers B.Sc. Zoology (40 students). Equipped with separate laboratory facilities, the department emphasizes a systematic pedagogical approach tailored to the learning needs of rural students. It provides comprehensive training in animal sciences, physiology, and ecological systems, quickly establishing itself as a vital part of the college's science education framework.
Department of Computer Science
Dept. Code: CSThe Department of Computer Science was introduced in 2020 with a B.Sc. Computer Science programme. With a sanctioned intake of 20 students, the department caters to the growing demand for IT education. It equips students with programming skills, database management, and knowledge of emerging technologies, ensuring they are well-prepared for careers in software development, data analysis, and digital industries. The college has established a separate Computer Science Lab with 20 computers for practical learning.
Department of Marine Biology
Dept. Code: MBThe Department of Marine Biology, established in 2013, offers B.Sc. Marine Biology with a sanctioned intake of 50 students in the first shift. In 2025, the Government of Tamil Nadu additionally approved 50 seats in the second shift. Being located in the coastal Ramanathapuram district, the programme is especially relevant, providing students with practical exposure to marine ecosystems, fisheries, and aquaculture. A separate Marine Lab was established in 2024, making this a highly job-oriented programme unique in the state.
Department of Commerce
Dept. Code: COMThe Department of Commerce was established in 1978 with the introduction of the B.Com. General programme. The sanctioned strength for the undergraduate programme is 50 students, offered in both I and II shifts. To provide higher learning opportunities, the department expanded by launching the M.Com. programme in 2003 with an intake of 25 students. The department further introduced M.Phil. in Commerce (2013) and Ph.D. in Commerce (2013), establishing itself as a center for both teaching and research.
Department of Commerce (CA)
Dept. Code: BCOMCAThe Department of Commerce (Computer Applications) was established in 2013 to address the growing demand for commerce graduates equipped with technological skills. It offers the B.Com. (Computer Applications) programme with a sanctioned strength of 40 students in the first shift. In 2025, the Government enhanced the intake by adding 10 additional seats in the first shift and introducing a second shift with 40 seats. The department maintains the official college website and provides internship training with commercial and cooperative banks.
